Early Childhood Educators and Parents, join us at 7 p.m. in Cleveland for a conversation about Developing Early Literacy Skills!
High-quality early childhood education experiences have positive impact on school-readiness skills, especially for low-income children. Join REL Midwest and WVIZ/PBS ideastream on Thursday, June 28, at the Idea Center at Playhouse Square from 7 to 8 p.m. in Cleveland for Developing Early Literacy Skills.
Nearly 75 percent of Ohio’s 50,000 at-risk children require intense or targeted literacy instruction, according to Ohio’s Kindergarten Readiness Assessment-Literacy of last year. This event intends to help you better understand research-based strategies that can be implemented in schools, homes, and communities to improve early childhood literacy skills.
Featured speakers are Timothy Shanahan, Ph.D., director of the Center for Literacy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Stephanie K. Siddens, Ph.D., director of the Office of Early Learning and School Readiness at the Ohio Department of Education.
Exercise Your Mind With PBS KIDS Lab!
Summer is learning time! Children and youth who are engaged with math, reading and writing skills in the summer are ready to learn new things when they return to school. Statistics from the National Association for Summer Learning demonstrate that all children lose math skills during the summer, no matter what their economic income level. Children who don’t participate in math activities in the summer regress a full two months in math skills by the end of the summer. The long term effect of summer learning loss is an increase in the achievement gap.
ideastream’s Education Department is piloting ways to help parents and educators engage kids (ages 2-8) in summer math learning. Funded by a Ready to Learn Grant, ideastream is partnering with the Broadway P-16, Cleveland Public Library Fleet Branch, University Settlement, Girls Scouts, the Broadway Boys and Girls Club, and staff and students in Cleveland Metropolitan Schools Willow and Miles Park to find ways to make MATH MATTER. Center to this pilot: PBS Kids Lab.
Summer learning is the perfect time for FUN activities and PBS Kids Lab has cool new math tools for summer learning fun including:
